Keane: Time To Go

Last Friday night my favorite show Monk concluded its run on the USA Network. In the weeks counting down to the final episode, USA began using today’s song for the promos. I loved the tune and had to Google (is this now officially a verb?) the lyrics to find out the artist and song title: Keane with “Time to Go” – today’s TV Thursday feature.

This song released in October 2008 is currently only available as the B side to the Keane single: “The Lovers are Losing.” Keane began as a collaboration of school friends that evolved into the current band. The name Keane was taken in honor of the last name of a friend of vocalist Tom Chaplin’s mother who had passed away and bequeathed some money to the Chaplin family.

One unique thing about this band is that the emphasis is not on guitar, but rather piano. While other keyboards and guitar are used (as in today’s feature), the primeval rock & roll instrument is used – just think “Rocket 88,” Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, ad infinitum. Keane also uses distortion on piano – much like be used on a guitar.

Tom Chaplin’s voice is great on this tune and I am thankful that the USA Network used this song for their Monk promos, as otherwise I would have never found it.

LYRICS
Now, during a scene
Seen it all before
We drink, we drink a little much
Drink a little more
To shake off the nerves and
To take off the edge and
Now is there any way back home?

Seen it all before and
I know the signs
We drink, drink a little much
To stimulate the mind
Now it's two hours to go
Insult everyone that we know
Now it’s such a long way home

Maybe it’s time to go?
Maybe it’s time we went?
You’re making a spectacle
Maybe it’s time we left?

I don’t wanna spoil your night
I don’t wanna hurt your pride
But maybe it’s time to go
Maybe it’s time?

Now eating from your hand
Laugh at every line
Soon losing track of you
Losing track of time
Now it’s dead on the dance floor
And nobody’s laughing anymore
Have I become a tiresome bore?

Maybe it’s time to go?
Maybe it’s time we went?
You’re making a spectacle
Maybe it’s time we left?

I don’t wanna spoil your night
I don’t wanna hurt your pride
But maybe it’s time to go?
Maybe it’s time?

To go where there’s nowhere to hide
From what’s broken inside
A faultline rips right open
Under the wide wide ocean's tide
Under the wide wide ocean

Maybe it’s time to go?
Maybe it’s time we went?
You’re making a spectacle
Maybe it’s time we left?

I don’t wanna spoil your night
I don’t wanna hurt your pride
Maybe it’s time to fly
Maybe it’s time?

Maybe it’s time to go?
Maybe it’s time?
